Coastal Fishing: Laayoune and Tan-Tan Carry the Rise in Landings as Dakhla and Agadir Fall Back

T

he first eight months of 2026 would redraw the map of Moroccan fishing. The Office National des Peches has posted its August statistical report: marketed products of coastal and small-scale fishing reach 723,490 tonnes against 682,683 a year earlier, 6% more by volume, for 7.44 billion dirhams, 1% more by value. The tonne therefore sells for less than in 2025, because the rise is almost entirely pelagic: small blue fish goes from 538,866 to 597,975 tonnes, while white fish falls 23% by weight, to 59,202 tonnes, seaweed 21% and shellfish 87%. Cephalopods, the leading item by value at 3.73 billion dirhams, gain 8% by weight.

The geography of this season would change faster than its tonnages. Laayoune lands 186,046 tonnes against 136,433, up 36%, Tan-Tan 87,522 against 60,799 and Tarfaya 32,986 against 22,877, two rises of 44%. The other way, the port of Dakhla drops to 24,730 tonnes, down 62%, while the separate line the Office keeps for stock C, attached to the same port, holds at 172,675 tonnes; Agadir loses 54% of its landings and Safi 25%. In the Mediterranean, where the total weighs only 12,435 tonnes, Tangier doubles its own. A fishing port lives on what is landed at its halls, and a fleet that follows the fish south will leave behind it auction floors, wholesalers and plants that will not follow.
