Open Skies: the European Parliament Brings Croatia Into the Morocco-EU Aviation Pact

M

eeting in plenary at Strasbourg on 8 July, the European Parliament passed, by 625 votes to 16 with 20 abstentions, the protocol folding Croatia into the Euro-Mediterranean aviation agreement that binds Morocco to the European Union. The adjustment is purely technical: it extends to Zagreb (an EU member since 2013) the open skies that Rabat and Brussels sealed in 2006, the single air market in which carriers from both shores serve each other’s airports without discrimination. Steered by Sweden’s Tomas Tobe, the text now awaits the Council’s final assent.

For twenty years that open sky has multiplied direct routes, fed tourism and drawn closer a diaspora the air link ties to home. Folding in Croatia rounds out a European map on which the Moroccan flag wins, airport after airport, an access right no border still curbs. By 2030, when the Kingdom co-hosts the World Cup and the travelers pour in, every link added to this network will tell: air connectivity is bargained today for tomorrow’s crowds.
