M

eeting in Tangier on October 5, the council of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region approved an agreement to finance, build and run an underwater park off M’diq, devoted to recreational diving and underwater sports.

Costed at 40 million dirhams in all, the project binds the region to the ministry in charge of sports and to several public bodies.

It provides for a fitted-out underwater diving area, an onshore reception center, a training hub and a marine research hub.

Billed as the first site of its kind in the kingdom, the park is meant to widen a tourism offer that still leans heavily on the beach, and to host underwater sports competitions.

Work will only begin, however, once a first construction contract is awarded, and no date has been announced for it.
