orty-seven degrees Celsius: that is the threshold Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology has forecast for this weekend in several provinces of the south and southeast. The alert bulletin, at orange vigilance level, covers Taroudant, Zagora, Tata, Assa-Zag, Es-Semara, Boujdour, Oued Eddahab and Aousserd, where the mercury should range between 44 and 47°C from Friday to Sunday. Temperatures of 42 to 44°C are also expected Friday in Beni Mellal, Fquih Ben Salah and Kelaat Sraghna, against a backdrop of possible thunderstorms, hail and gusting wind.
The wave fits an already scorching summer, with alerts following one another almost without pause across the presaharan provinces since late July. Authorities are urging residents to limit physical effort during the hottest hours, stay hydrated, and watch over the elderly and children; farm services, for their part, are watching the storms forecast toward the end of the period, capable of bringing as much hail as relief. The south will wait for rain the way one waits for a truce.
