License Plates: NARSA Denies Any General Obligation to Change Before the End of 2026

T

he claim that every vehicle registration plate in circulation must be replaced before December 31, 2026 is wrong. Morocco’s National Road Safety Agency (NARSA) said so plainly in a statement issued on September 4, reminding road users to hold to official sources.

Two hands hold up a white plate showing MA, a number, an Arabic letter above a Latin letter, and a digit.

The text behind the confusion is real enough: decision no. 640.26 of the Minister of Transport and Logistics, published in Bulletin officiel no. 7531 of August 3, aligns the model and the dimensions of the plates carried inside the country with the ones a Moroccan vehicle shows abroad.

Plates in the ordinary series stay valid until the first transfer of ownership, which is to say until the vehicle is sold on. Only vehicles registered in Morocco and used in international traffic have to carry the new model by December 31, 2026.

The provisions covering mopeds and light three and four-wheelers are pushed to January 1, 2027.

The reform that matters, though, is not painted metal: the decision allows the registration certificate and the ownership title to be drawn up on an electronic medium. No bumper will ever show that.
