ublished on September 15 by the High Commission for Planning, the index of industrial, energy and mining production for the second quarter of 2026 puts manufacturing output excluding oil refining down 4.5% year on year. Chemicals carry most of the fall, dropping 29.5%, ahead of the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products (19.5%), printing and the reproduction of recordings (12.3%), clothing (10%) and furniture (5%). Extractive industries, for their part, fall 28.8%, on a 29.6% decline in the sector’s miscellaneous products that the 0.6% rise in metal ores does not offset.
The picture is not uniformly dark. The manufacture of metal products, machinery and equipment aside, gains 14.1%, metallurgy 11.6%, the automobile industry 6%, the manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products 5.9% and food industries 5.7%; electric power output adds 1.9%. Two industrial systems thus emerge within a single quarter: one of metals, cars and materials, which pulls, and one of chemicals, electronics and textiles, which weighs. The third-quarter index will say which of the two set the tone of the year.
