he Fes-Meknes Regional Investment Center (CRI) has launched a call for expressions of interest to design, build and operate a tourist cable car in the city of Fes, according to the file posted on its website and dated October 7. The line will link two high points, access hubs or viewpoints still to be chosen, over 1,500 to 3,500 meters, designed to offer panoramic views of the medina; the document assumes, as a working hypothesis, less than twenty-four months of construction, while the route, cabin capacity and investment remain to be set. Preselection applications are due at the CRI’s headquarters by January 9, 2027, at half past four in the afternoon.
The real test will be heritage. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1981, the medina must lose neither its vistas nor its visual integrity, and the file asks bidders to look first for sites outside the historic fabric, without flying directly over the heart of Fes el-Bali. Selection, in two phases, will fall to a committee that includes the wilaya, the region, the municipality, the Regional Directorate of Culture, ADER and the urban planning agency, and a lack of proven references in cable transport will be disqualifying. The kingdom’s spiritual capital could thus behold its medina from the sky, provided the cable knows how to step aside for it.
