n 29 June, the White House proclaimed, for a maximum of eight months, the lifting of the countervailing duties that struck Moroccan phosphate fertilizers, in the name of a food emergency and the need to supply American farmers without interruption. Signed by President Donald Trump, the text explicitly names Morocco as a reliable supplier, able to serve a market where domestic phosphate output has shrunk by more than half since 1995. Sought by many farm associations and dozens of elected officials, the measure should cut the price of phosphate fertilizers across the Atlantic by about 22 percent.
The OCP Group welcomed an important step toward resuming its deliveries to the American market, on the eve of the next growing season, closing a long stretch of tension born of a complaint by its rival Mosaic. The world’s leading exporter of phosphate fertilizers, the Cherifian champion sees Washington confirm what the figures already said: from Khouribga to the grain plains of the Midwest, the food security of part of the world now runs through Moroccan subsoil.
