Heritage: Police and National Museums Foundation Join Forces Against Art Trafficking

M

orocco’s General Directorate for National Security and the National Foundation of Museums signed an agreement on October 14, in Rabat, to protect the national museums and the kingdom’s cultural heritage against theft, forgery and illicit trafficking.

Presided over by Abdellatif Hammouchi, director general of national security, and by Mehdi Qotbi, president of the FNM, the signing commits the two institutions to coordinate the prosecution of offenses against heritage, with particular attention to archaeological and artistic forgeries.

The text also provides for stronger physical security at museums and a training strand on the methods of forgers and traffickers. In return, the Foundation will give technical support to the National Security Museum.

The antiquities trade feeds on two weaknesses, poorly guarded places and expertise too rare to tell the fake from the genuine. That is exactly where this agreement will focus its efforts.
