U-15 World Cup: Morocco Open the Inaugural Edition With a 2-0 Win Over the Philippines

M

orocco’s Atlas Cubs opened their campaign at the very first FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival on Saturday, October 24, with a 2-0 win over the Philippines in Baku, Azerbaijan. It was all settled in the opening quarter of an hour: the national under-15 side took the lead in the sixth minute, doubled it in the seventeenth, then held on to the final whistle. The Royal Moroccan Football Federation confirmed the result on its official accounts shortly after the match, the first round of fixtures in Group F.

The young Moroccans will also face Belize, Costa Rica, Curacao and Liberia there, in a tournament whose very name places it halfway between competition and festival. The strong start extends a fine week for Moroccan football, three days after the futsal Lions won their fourth straight continental title against Angola. For a generation discovering the world stage, this first outing will stay tied to the inaugural edition of a tournament in which Morocco signed one of the very first wins.
