Red Meat: Morocco’s Duty-Free Cattle Import Quota for 2026 Is Exhausted

M

orocco’s Ministry of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries and Food Sovereignty announced on Friday, October 23, that the quota of three hundred thousand slaughter cattle whose import was exempt from customs duties and VAT for 2026 has been reached. Importers and professionals had been informed by notice no. 1484 of October 15, posted on the ministry’s online portal, La Vie eco, Le360 and Liberation report. Thirty-seven importing companies took part in the operation, and more than 90% of the animals came from Brazil, whose supply proved more available than that of European countries. The average monthly pace stood at close to twenty-four thousand head, peaking above forty-four thousand in June and July and dipping to seventeen thousand in August and September.

The measure answered a rise in red meat prices that the ministry attributes to the decline in animals available for slaughter, itself caused by persistent drought and the rising cost of livestock feed, both local and imported. According to the ministry, the operation supplied national markets and helped stabilize prices. The communique announces no new quota: until December 31, slaughter cattle crossing the border would therefore no longer enjoy the exemption.
