Morocco Orders EFE and TVE Journalists to Leave Fnideq

T

he journalists of the EFE news agency and the Spanish public broadcaster TVE, who had been covering the approaches to the border for several days, were told to leave Fnideq on Saturday, August 15.

It was their hotel front desks that informed them. An official, saying he was following instructions, warned them that their press credentials and their equipment could be seized if they did not comply.

Rabat gave no reason for its decision, but the calendar comments on it. Earlier in the month a 2M crew was refused entry to Ceuta as it came to cover the aftermath of the late-July rush, and the Moroccan press has since spoken of reciprocity.

Madrid answered that it defends press freedom at all times and in all places, and Spanish professional associations demanded that the right to information be respected.
