he trading session of Thursday would never take place. The Casablanca Stock Exchange first informed the public that the day’s session was momentarily suspended, because of a technical incident that had occurred that same morning, and that its teams were looking for its origin. “All the teams of the Casablanca Stock Exchange are mobilized in order to identify the origin of the incident and to implement the appropriate measures to restore the normal functioning of the session as quickly as possible,” the communique said, assuring market participants of a follow-up in line with the procedures in force. The resumption would never come: switching to the backup site did not resolve the incident, and the exchange announced the definitive halt of the session.
Every event recorded since the opening is canceled, transactions as well as order entries, modifications and cancellations, and trading will resume on the order books closed at the end of September 16, with the validity of each order taken into account. A further communication is promised once normal operations return. No communique yet says where the fault came from, and that is where the rest of this will be settled: a marketplace is judged as much by its stoppages as by its records, and the one in Casablanca will have to explain how a whole session could be erased without the backup site catching it.
